      How do heat pumps work?
      - Heat pumps use electricity to capture heat and move it from one place to another. They don't generate heat.
      - As the pool pump circulates the swimming pool's water, the water drawn from the pool passes through a filter and the heat pump heater. The heat pump heater has a fan that draws in the outside air and directs it over the evaporator coil. Liquid refrigerant within the evaporator coil absorbs the heat from the outside air and becomes a gas. The warm gas in the coil then passes through the compressor. The compressor increases the heat, creating a very hot gas that then passes through the condenser. The condenser transfers the heat from the hot gas to the cooler pool water circulating through the heater. The heated water then returns to the pool. The hot gas, as it flows through the condenser coil, returns to liquid form and back to the evaporator, where the whole process begins again.
Will a heat pump provide all the heat needed in the winter?
      - A heat pump ordinarily becomes less effective below 35 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit ambient temperature. Below that, it may be necessary to supplement the heat provided by the heat pump.
Can I put the heat pump in a shed?
      - Heat pumps need plenty of air circulation. They work better outside.
Should I cover my heat pump in the winter time?
      - No, your heat pump was designed to be outside. Covering it will only make a warm dry place for animals looking for a home. If you feel that falling tree limbs are direct threat you can cover the fan grate only.
How do I winterize my pool heat pump?
      - To winterize your heat pump you need to turn of the power to it. You MUST ensure that you have drained all of the water from the heater. Water left in the heater will freeze causing significant damage to your heat pump. The plumbing must be left in such a way that it will not collect any water or be accessible to animals over the winter. If you are not confident that you are able to achieve any of the above guidelines please seek help from your qualified pool care professional.
Can I install my heat pump indoors?
      - No, a heat pump uses the warm outside air to heat your pool and exhausts the cold from the water. If it were installed inside it would quickly use up any warm air and replace it with the cold exhaust.
