    Water Test Kits

    1. 4 years ago
Easy to use and very accurate
I used this kit and compared the results with those received from my local pool company test. They were the same.

      very convenirnt
For the pool owner who does not want to run to the pool store for every water check. All you need in one compact test kit. Very easy to understand directions.

      Good product
Needed to get water chemistry balanced in a newly re-plastered pool so needed to test more than Chlorine, PH, and Alkalinity. I followed charts in the kit regarding what to dump into the pool to get PH, calcium hardness, alkalinity, cyanuric acid in acceptable range. Numbers were within 2% - 3% of what I was shooting for upon retest (waited about 8 hours to retest) so I believe the kit is pretty accurate. I would purchase it again.

      Best Purchase Ever!
This is just like going to the pool store and asking them to test your water. It gives you the number (PH is 6.8) and if it is ok or lo. Genious! I havn't been to the pool store for testing in a month. When my husband suggested getting this, I just figured another stupid gadget that he likes to get! Great gadget-NOT STUPID! Best purchase ever!

      Great for Color Blind People
I have been using this tester for two years and love the ease of use. Being color blind it was a pain to chase my wife around to get her to read results. Now I can do it all in one shot. I do agree results vary from dropper testers but if you just rely on this test you will be okay.

      Easiest test kit to use
I use these type of test strips and meters all the time with diabetes, so I have some experience. Many other reviewers had problems with accuracy. The best instructions I got were from another reviewer: Dunk the strip in the water and immediately put in the reader (face down). With that, it produces fast, consistent results. This isn't really mentioned in the instructions. I have tried the other types of testing kits, and can never really tell if the color I see is out of range or OK. Having the ... read more meter is a tremendous benefit.

      Best service, best price
As always great service and quick delivery their products. I've been using them for years now and can assure that they have the best prices of all the internet choices; and without a doubt you will save hundreds per season over brick and mortar pool stores.

      7 Way Test Strips
At first glance, you would think that these strips would not dial you in that well on your chemistry. After using them for three years now, I've found that they really do. I rarely go to the pool store for a computer water check anymore. These strips are so quick and easy that I can check my chemistry as often as I like. The vaules to be in shown by the strips have proven to be very accurate. When I keep my pool within the guidelines, I have no problems with the pool.

      Great Products
I always buy my pool supplies at In the Swim and usually have great service. Last time I ordered I accidentally ordered the wrong test strips and realized this when I printed off my receipt and immediately contacted them to have them send the right ones. I was told the order had already been processed and they couldn't stop it. It had been less than 5 minutes??!! I don't understand how their system works but seems there should be a way to change an order within a set period of time.

      liquid pool test kit
I bought this kit to replace an old one. The test procedure was slightly different, but the instructions were clear and easy to understand.

      Better then the dipsticks
I used to use the dipsticks, they dont show you if your levels are low or high.. This test kit shows you if your : "Free" chlorine Total chlorine pH Alkalinity Is low or high so you can adjust. This is most important tools you can use. It's either Scrub or SWIM ! I prefer to swim so this is one of my tools.

      Easy & Efficient
This test kit is easy to use and accurate. Much better then the color matching. The bottles last me about 1.5 months with daily testing. The only problem I have had with this kit is that the tester didn't work after the first summer the pool was open, about 3 months. I did keep it outside at our pool house so I don't know if cold affects it that much. The price is not so bad, but I don't want to have to buy a new one each summer.

      Best Test Kit
After purchasing my third different test kit I finally found the best one. It has all of the tests that I need in one kit. It takes all of the guess work out of the equation. No more trying to match a color or line up the camera in my phone to a card that does take the correct picture.

      Convenient & Accurate
Very convenient & accurate to use on our salt water pool. No more trips to the pool store for testing.

      Makes Testing Easy
These strips are great. I no longer feel like a chemist messing around with different bottles of solutions to figure out my levels. Just dip wait a few seconds a see what your levels are and they have a nice chart for matching colors. The only one that is a bit sketchy is the PH level although you know when you are at 6.8 it is just hard to tell the difference between 7.2 and 7.6 which doesn't really matter since both of those levels are good.

      Accurate Readings
Test strips seem to be giving an accurate reading. I do not have anything to compare against but the pool water looks awesome It was a little cloudy; the test strip was showing me low on chlorine. I added the chlorine the test strip read good for pool and the water is sparkling now.

      iT DOES NOT FLOAT.
I love it. A floating thermometer is not accurate because of the sun shining on it. I tether my thermometer on a line and it tells me the water temperature below the surface. I am able to read it despite my low vision.

Consistent results - I can confidently add chemicals with this kit.

OK but an not completly satisfied
I purchased this to get better reading on pH and free chlorine. I didn't need the salt, ORP and TDS but figured, no big deal. The instrument give me much more precise pH readings than test strips - happy about that, but the instrument sequentially then test for salt, TDS and ORP, which may take 2-3 minutes (all the while, I am waiting just to get to the chlorine). Once it gets to chlorine, it provides a qualitative answer (good) verse a numerical result (3.1). I wanted the numerical result. Would not buy again

    Pool Water Testing FAQ

Testing your pool water regularly is the best thing you can do to ensure clean and healthy water that won't make your swimmers sick. Water balance is when your pool has the correct levels of Chlorine, pH, Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness and Stabilizer. In addition to sanitary water that looks beautiful, balanced pool water protects your pool surfaces from stain and scale formation.

Why & When Test Pool Water?

Testing pool water several times per week, is the only way to achieve 'water balance', so important for healthy, sanitary water because it affects the potency of chlorine, and creates poor living conditions for algae and bacteria. Balanced pool water also protects your pool surfaces and equipment from corrosion, etching, staining and fading. Good for all the soft and shiny surfaces in your pool; including the eyes, skin and hair of your swimmers.

Pool Test Kits or Test Strips?

Pool test kits, those with liquid or tablet reagents are almost always more accurate or trustworthy than test strips, which may miss the mark by 10-20%, and can be more difficult to discern small changes in color. Pool test strips are fast and convenient however, and some pool owners use test strips several times per week, but also have a full test kit to run more complete pool water tests every week or two, or to verify and re-check test results from test strips. In addition to greater accuracy, test kits also have additional tests and charts to help in calculating the correct chemical amounts, when adjustments are needed.

Best Test Kit for Pool Owners?

The best pool test kit will be one that you will use - regularly. For a complete pool water Test Kit, the Taylor K-2005 is the standard in the pool industry. If you really love pool chemistry, or happen to be color blind, look at the LaMotte ColorQ test kits with digital colorimeter. For Test Strips, we carry the entire line of AquaChek strips and also strips by LaMotte and Frog. For complete pool testing, the AquaChek Select 7-way and the Insta Test 6-in-1 test strips will run the full battery of pool water tests. See also our Commercial Pool Tests Kits & Meters page for more water testers.

    Ideal Pool Chemical Levels

       - pH: 7.2 - 7.6
       - Free Chlorine: 1.0 - 3.0 ppm
       - Combined Chlorine: 0.3 ppm or less
       - Total Alkalinity: 80-120 ppm
       - Calcium Hardness: 200 ppm or more
       - Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer): 30 - 50 ppm

    Pool Chemical Level Adjustments

Test strips will tell you what the current chemical levels are - but not how much chemical to add to raise or lower levels. A good pool test kit will also have acid demand/base demand tests, and chemical dosage charts, to help you better determine how much of what chemical, is needed to balance pool test levels.

Also important is to adjust each pool chemical individually. Allow a few hours for a chemical to take effect before adding other chemicals, or before testing and adjusting the same chemistry level again. For safety reasons, be sure to open only one chemical at a time, and never use the same scoop for different pool chemicals.

    Pool Testing Pitfalls to Avoid

       - Store your test kit and test strips indoors, or in a cool and dry location.
       - Completely rinse test vials before and after use
       - Do not interchange test reagent bottle caps
       - Hold test reagent bottle vertical when dispensing drops
       - Do not test surface water, but draw sample water elbow-deep
       - Test a new sample, before making large chemical adjustments
