  • Cover pump only runs for a few short seconds
    • Insufficient water level. Below 1/2 inch.
    • Clogged strainer or jammed impeller.
    • Blocked discharge hose.
  • Cover pump does not run
    • Electrical connections, check outlet
  • Cover pump runs, but does not pump water
    • Air lock in discharge hose.
    • Blockage or kinks in discharge hose
    • Cloggeded strainer or jammed impeller
Technical Tips
  • To check impeller, disconnect the Rule 1800 from the power source, and remove the blue strainer base by squeezing the two clips on the underside of the base. Remove any debris caught in or wound around the impeller. The impeller should spin freely with a slight touch.
  • To check hose, test pump without the discharge hose attached to see if pumping occurs.
  • To check the base, remove it from the pump, and test pump in a few inches of water, without the base attached, and the discharge hose removed. If the Rule 1800 pumps water, check hose and base.
  • Discharge works best when the hose is straight, without loops, which can cause air-locks.
  • To reset the Rule 1800 pump, unplug the cord, wait a few seconds and plug the pump in again.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What size discharge hose can I use?
- The Rule 1800 comes with a 3/4 inch male threaded adapter, to attach a standard garden hose. You can also clamp on a flexible backwash hose to the Rule pump, or remove the garden hose adapter and clamp a 1-1/4 inch vacuum hose to the discharge port of the cover pump.

Will the Rule 1800 freeze-up during cold weather?
- Even if your Rule cover pump is sitting in a solid sheet of ice, no damage will occur. The Rule 1800 pool cover drain pump is equipped with a protective circuit that prevents damage when it becomes embedded in ice or jammed with debris.

I have a lot of trees, will the Rule 1800 become clogged?
- The unique, oversized strainer base spreads out the suction of the Rule cover pump, so that clogging is rare, with normal types of tree debris. Large leaves, acorns, berries pose no problem for the Rule pump. Large volumes of small leaves or seeds can work their way into the base, and reduce flow. If this should occur, simply pull the cover pump on deck and hose off the base. Use a leaf rake to remove the debris from the cover, and reset the pump on to the pool cover.

Can I use the Rule 1800 to pump liquids other than water?
- The Rule 1800 is meant for de-watering applications only. Do not use it to pump caustic or corrosive liquids.

I have a salt water pool, will the salt damage the Rule cover pump?
- Salt water pools pose no problem for the Rule 1800 cover pump.

How long will the Rule 1800 cover pump really last?
- There are Rule 1800 pumps that are still in service after 20 years, but the average lifespan is likely less. In most cases, Rule cover pumps will serve for 5-10 years before accidental damage occurs to the pump or cord, at which point most owners will purchase new.

Can I repair the Rule 1800 cover pump?
- The motor is in a sealed housing, and meant to be non-serviceable. The hose adapter and base are available as replacement parts.

How fast will the Rule 1800 pump out my pool?
- At zero feet of lift, the H3SP-24 pumps 1800 gallons per hour (GPH). At 5 feet of lift, the flowrate reduces to 1250 GPH and at 10' of lift, it drops further to 700 GPH. For faster draining, place the Rule 1800 in the shallow end, and then move it to the deep end as the water level drops. Run the hose up the shallow end floor if possible, to create a more gradual lift of the discharge water.
