Filters and Pumps for Above Ground Pools

The central components of any above ground pool are the filter and pump. Together, above ground pool filters and above ground pool pumps circulate water through your pool, remove debris, and distribute chlorine and other chemicals throughout the pool. Imagine swimming in a stagnant pond and you will have a good idea what your pool would be like without above ground pool filters and pumps.

While above ground swimming pool pumps are much easier to install than their in-ground counterparts, they still serve an important function. Ultimately, the clarity and cleanliness of your pool water depends on your above ground pool pump and filter system. When shopping for above ground pool pumps it is important to consider the size of your pool because you need water to be properly circulated to prevent bacteria and germ from living in the water.

As far as above ground swimming pool filters are concerned, there are three varieties: sand filters, cartridge filters, and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters.

Sand above ground filters are the most common type of filter and they have also been around the longest. These above ground swimming pool filters push water through a bed of sand and impurities are filtered out before water is returned to the pool.

Cartridge above ground pool filters are a bit different. Water is forced through a filter material so that debris can be trapped and cartridge filters work in much the same way your sink filter works. The benefit of cartridge filters is that they have a larger filtration area than sand filters and they run at a lower pressure. As such, cartridge filters put less pressure on above ground pool pumps and therefore have less impact on water flow.

Finally, DE above ground pool filters represent the most advanced filtration technology. Diatomaceous earth is essentially fossilized exoskeletons that act like very small filters. DE filters are great because they can remove the smallest particles of all. Unfortunately, DE filters also run at higher pressures which may affect water flow.

At In the Swim, we carry some of the top names in above ground pool filters and pumps.
