My pool is freeform, how do I know what size blanket to buy?
Measure your pool’s length and width, at right angles to each other, and buy the size of rectangle solar cover that will cover your entire pool in all directions. Lay the rectangle over your pool and trim away the excess.
Can I use a solar pool blanket for a winter cover?
No, the solar blanket will make a poor winter cover, because it does not block sunlight and it does not have an overlapping edge, to keep debris out of the pool.
What do I do with my old solar blanket – just throw it out?
You can recycle your old solar blanket, or trimmings from a new solar cover. I have seen pool owners use old solar cover pieces on top of the woodpile, to cover a small boat, or to wrap up fragile items for moving or storage. If you can’t reuse your old solar blanket, recycle it!
Is there a product to protect the solar blanket from deterioration?
There are covers for your solar cover. Sounds silly, but outside of chemical degradation from high chlorine and low pH, the biggest enemy to your solar pool cover is … the sun. They do make solar cover covers to block the sun when the solar blanket is stored on a solar reel. Storing it inside or in the shade when not in use will help to prolong the life of your solar pool cover.
